Candidates Victorious! (No Election Necessary)

For anyone who thinks First-Past-the-Post is just fine as an electoral system; have a quick look at this.

... two WHOLE COUNCILS decided by unopposed Wards!

Quite unbelievable really.

Thankfully, that type of democratic accountability won't be happening in Scotland ever again ;-))

There're other councils where a party is already assured the control of the council because even if some wards are contested, a party is already sure of some seats (for ex 3 members ward with 3 Lab candidates and 1 LD...Labour sure of 2 seats)....Labour has already held Bolsover other than Easington. The tories already have Rutland, Hambleton and South Northamptonshire other than Fenland.

Ah, Easington (other than having 25 Labour candidates returned unopposed) also have Labour assured of 13 more seats because of lack of opposition candidates...so 38 Labour seats out 49 before any votes casted! I wonder what's the point of voting in Easington...(IIRC a ward has the great choice between Labour and...Socialist Alternative or something of that sort. I wonder if any Tory lives in that ward and what he/she could vote...)

Andrew,

"wouldn't happen under STV ;-)"
I suppose the answer is no......I think too many uncontested wards in one authority is not a good thing. Apart not giving voters a real choice, not having to really face voters don't help the current ruling party IMO...the prospect of the election can make them work hard and better IMO
